Public Radio on the iPhone – but of course!
Posted: December 8th, 2008 | Author: jake | Filed under: Blog, Public Radio Tuner | Tags: iphone publicradio project | 6 Comments »The Public Radio Tuner iPhone App Project is a collaborative effort lead by the Public Radio Exchange (PRX) in partnership with National Public Radio (NPR), Public Interactive (PI), American Public Media (APM), and Public Radio International (PRI), with participation from Doc Searls and Project VRM at Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, additional stations and producers, and in coordination with Apple’s U.S. Education division. The goal is to create the Public Radio Tuner – an application for the iPhone platform using Apple’s recently released software development kit (SDK) and iTunes App Store distribution service. The application will serve end users by initially offering access to local stations’ internet radio streams. Additional versions will offer program/content guides along with a catalog of on-demand audio content from local, independent, and national content providers. Future functionality will enable direct listener contributions to stations and content providers. The project will establish a coordinated approach to the iPhone as a powerful platform for public media, setting standards and shared resources for further application development.

I sure like the Public Radio Tuner! It can’t let me listen to live audio streams while in another app. I just like its new design! Hooray for you guys at NPR!
This Program it’s grate. Felicitaciones porque es un sueño hecho realidad. Dios les bendiga grandemente.
Are there any stations that work continuously on the 3G network. Usually it will only play for about 30 seconds before being cut off. I understand this is likely bandwidth, but would like to know if there is any station that has increased their bandwidth so I can listen while walking to work or exercising outside. If I am at home (with Wi-Fi), I can just listen to the radio. Thanks.
I love this application, by the way.
I just downloaded the app for my iPhone. Awesome! To say the least. I live in a rural area and work in a building with a lot of RF interference from electronic equipment. So needless to say, I am going to use this app a lot. The only immediate suggestion would be a link to the station’s program guide to find out what you are listening to. Thanks for publishing what I consider one of the top 10 apps for the iPhone.
Any chance we’ll get Canadian Pub Radio? Love the upgrade. Thanks
I love listening on my iTouch! As a suggestion, it would be very nice to be able to listen concurrently while bringing up other applications. With the current version, the radio stops upon leaving to start another application.
Thanks for great application!
