Version 2.1 update to the Public Radio Player is now live in the App Store. The PRX tech team has rewritten the code for the app from the ground up, resulting in greatly improved performance. Current users should be receiving an update notice in your app manager on your iPhone or iPod Touch. You can also download the new version from the iTunes App Store.

We’ve got some exciting additions to an already great public radio resource. Here’s what’s new in this version:

  • Alarm clock
  • Sleep Timer
  • Safari integration
  • Faster, more responsive user interface
  • Ability to edit and manage your favorites
  • Video tutorial for new users
  • Addition of advertising on directory pages to support future Public Radio Player
    development efforts

Over the next week, we’ll focus in on some of these features and discuss what they mean for the app. But for now, go and download the 2.1 update of the Public Radio Player and enjoy your weekend with public radio on-the-go.

New Update: Version 2.1.1 is now live in the iTunes store. As with any major upgrade, we have run into a few post release issues. With your help, we have identified the problems and our developers are already working on them. We expect fixes to be made shortly and after testing, we will re-submit to iTunes for a 2.1.1 release.

Here are the known issues for version 2.1 of the Public Radio Player

  • The feedback link on the FAQ page results in a routing error.
  • Streams and On Demand programs with (‘) single quotes in the title are causing breaks in data sync and these streams are not displaying in the directories.
  • The local tab is currently displaying options based off of the stations in the Featured tab rather than searching the entire station directory.
  • The app is prompting for location services to be used when not using the Local tab.
  • Possible loss of Streams and On Demand items in a user’s Favorites list.

We are working to push a fix for these issues as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

Thorin, we are going to be looking at a number of options for how to make the Public Radio Player financially self-sustaining beyond our Grant from the CPB. Thanks for your suggestion – I’ll raise it with the rest of the team.

Can we get a paid version w/o the ads? You
guys have a fantastic app here and I’d prefer to support you directly rather than have to look at ads.

2.1.1. seems to be the rock-steady app I knew it could be.

    Thanks for fixing the bugs!!
Now I have some This American Life to catch up on…

Steve – KIPO has been restored in the 2.1.1 release that is now available in the iTunes Store.

What happened to KIPO Hawai’i public radio? I listened while on vacation last year and really enjoyed it, and it had been a frequent selection on my Public Radio App.. But after the update (which wiped favorites..), it is found in the search, but the screen doesnt load with the logo, and it wont play.

Well, I do hope the bug fix update fixes the following:
    * All my favorites disappeared!
    * The On-Demand page does not have listings for “Wait Wait” or “Car Talk” (among others) though Search can find them.
    * When Search pulls up a listing, it tries to show a content synopsis, but no date of airing – so no way to know *which* episode to select.

When using the alarm it does not play the stream until I click the message that appears. I assumed it would play the station to wake me up. Can you also provide documentation, i.e. user mannual.

I downloaded PR 2.1. Should have waited for 2.1.1! All favorites-gone. Also, I hope you folks will be gettting WPR, “Ideas Network” back. v2.1 displays it as an undefined link on my 3G phone. This update is weak!

This will be a great update once the bugs are taken care of. Thanks to the team!

Previous version included my favorite station WSLU at St. Lawrence University (also called NCPR or North Country Public Radio). As recently as this morning I was using the previous version to listen to this station so I know that their stream is still good. Is there a way to get an update of stations or do I wait for the next release?

Same comments as above. . . WFAE in Charlotte is only available as a search but when you select it, you get Null / Null and no programming.

The Local listing is BROKEN. . . nothing listed within 50 miles, nothing listed within 250, and only 3 stations listed within 500 miles.

    And my FAVORITES are gone.

Let me know if you want to TEST the app before releasing it next time!

Tom, either here or on the Give Feedback page is the best place to report issues. Thanks for taking the time to contact us.

How would you suggest we submit bug reports? I can’t find a link anywhere, and the link in the app is broken.

    What I’ve found so far:
    * Trying to submit feedback via the embedded link comes up with a routing error
    * Clicking the Live / Local button only comes up with WABE in Atlanta – I live in Charlotte and we do have a pretty fantastic NPR station of our own. (Already identified)
    * All my favorites are gone
    * Cannot find Splendid Table or Fresh Air or MarketPlace in the list of On Demand streams, but I can find them when I perform a search.
    * Numerous stations are missing (or maybe they only list stations that aren’t playing NPR shows at the moment?) Now WFAE, but WFAE HD2 and HD3 are listed. Plus WBGO is proud to be located in Newark NJ, not in New York, so it is in the wrong state.

That’s enough for now. I’m sure if I continue to try to use the app, I’ll find more bugs. I’ll hobble along for now, hoping that they get these things fixed soon.
