Where’s my favorite station?

Posted: January 14th, 2009 | Author: Josh from Public Radio Player | Filed under: Public Radio Tuner | 37 Comments »

That’s a question occasionally rolling in from users of the Public Radio Tuner (for reference, here’s the current list of participating stations). Our goal is for the Public Radio Tuner to offer each and every public radio station in the country. But the public radio system is a loose confederation of hundreds of stations, and we have made the Public Radio Tuner an opt in project. One reason is that additional listeners from the iPhone may increase bandwidth costs for stations, and we all know money is tight these days. Additionally, the iPhone app can’t handle all audio formats – so a station with a Windows Media stream, for example, won’t be compatible with the Public Radio Tuner. And finally, we’ve been working hard to get the word out to stations about the opportunity to join the project. If you’re a listener and don’t see your favorite station on the app, you can contact the station directly and politely suggest they join the project so you can enjoy their great programming on the iPhone. If you’re at a station and would like to join the Public Radio Tuner, it’s easy to do so – check out our submission guide for stations .

I just downloaded the app, and am not seeing KXT either. Was there a fix for this?

    I tried deleting and reinstalling…

Barton, KOHM has not submitted their stream to be included in the Public Radio Player. This is an opt-in project for stations and we welcome all qualifying stations. You may want to contact your local station and suggest they join the Player. Info on how they can submit their stream is found at http://www.publicradioplayer.org/?page_id=80 Thanks!

I absolutely love this app, but I’m moving to an area where the station has not yet opted into the system. It is KOHM-FM 89.1 South Plains Public Radio run by Texas Tech University. Any chance you could contact them about become a member of the Public Radio Tuner network?

Josh, this is just really weird. I have deleted and reloaded the app about 5 times under ever conceivable circumstance (after turning phone off and then on again, from my computer, etc. etc. etc.) and KXT still doesn’t show up anywhere – under Local, State, anything. I see the other local station KERA and lots of stations under Texas, but no KXT. I’m stumped…

Betsy, this does seem strange. I am listening to KXT on the app right now – and it was listed third to last in the Texas listings. But, like you, it is not showing up in search for me either. So I will check with the tech team for additional ideas, but you may want to delete and reinstall the app.

Josh, thanks for your reply, but I’m really stumped here. As I had tried many times before contacting you, I once again tried to look under “State” and scroll down to “Texas” but still see no KXT 91.7 anywhere. I do see KTXI as well as KERA, the other Dallas NPR station, but no KXT.
I even tried using the “Search” option but got no results for “KXT” under “Live” or “On Demand” programming. I have deleted and reloaded the app several times both from my phone and from iTunes on my compter, and I have version 2.1.2. I promise I am completely sane and have no vision problems…very weird!

  7. Josh from Public Radio Player said at 9:31 am on April 27th, 2010:

Betsy, I just checked and KXT is indeed available in the app (great station, by the way). When you open the App, make sure you select “Live”, then select “State”. Scroll down to Texas and KXT is listed toward the bottom of the Texas section. Let us know if you have further troubles. Thanks!

Ahhhh! I’m so confused. I want to listen to my local public radio station, KXT 91.7 (in Dallas) on my iPhone. I’ve downloaded the Public Radio Player app several times (from the App Store on my phone as well as into iTunes on my computer) and the station does not come up under “Local” or if I try to search for it. The station features your app on its website and has a link to download the app to iTunes, but when I search your site for the station it doesn’t show up on the list of participating stations. Help!

Mike, the most recent update to the app had some data sync issues with a handful of stations. They will be restored when we push a fix to users in the next few days. Thanks

What happened? Hawaii’s KHPR and KIPO stations got deleted. They opt out? I believe they were on the list until recently.

Mark, I just double checked, and KEXP is on the Tuner and listed under Washington stations. I’m listening right now via the Tuner and it’s coming in loud and clear.

  32. Mark said at 1:53 pm on February 7th, 2009:

KEXP – 90.3 – Seattle / New York is included on the list of participating stations, but it doesn’t actually appear within the app. Why the tease?

Guess that Alabama Public Radio and WPLN will just have to notify me when I can hear them with Public Radio Tuner. Those stations
are the nearest sources to Rocket City for On Point, Talk of the Nation, To the Point, The World, and the noon time programs. Perhaps Wonder Radio would cooperate. The iTunes Store remembers that purchase. What do you recommend for podcasts?

I don’t have an iPhone but am v. curious about the PRT. Is there any chance that it will, at some point, offer streams from abroad? Like from the BBC or French/Polish/etc. stations?
